The Next New Thing

We live in New York City, where everyone is in a rush for the most part.  We spend countless amount of hours   in transit.  It would be nice if we could use that transit time to multitask and do something we need to do regardless.  Grocery shopping is something we tend to spend a lot of time on.  Supermarkets should provide electronic advertisements of their daily selection in subway stations where we commuters could shop while in transit.  Commuters could take snapshots of item bar code images and purchases their grocery online.  The grocery would then be scheduled to be delivered to the commuters home by the end of the day.  This way, people don't have to spend unnecessary time waiting in line at a check out or spend more time commuting to a supermarket.  Of course there would be an mobile phone application that would integrate all these processes together.

  1. I believe they have something similar to this in Korean transit system that would work wonders here in the US. Here's a link to an article that depicts it. http://www.popsci.com/gadgets/article/2011-07/video-tescos-new-virtual-grocery-lets-you-browse-store-shelves-while-waiting-subway

If they did this in the US, so much time would be saved on the weekends for doing other things like enjoying the sun while laying out on the Beach for starters! :)

  2. Incorporating this within the subway system would be extremely efficient in terms of shaving off vital time. The only thing we have close to saving time in check-outs is the service of Fresh Direct which delivers your food to your home. Despite these deliveries being convenient, you are still taking the time to online search when you can be doing something else.

  3. This is a great inventive idea. Commuters today spent so many hours going back and forth from work. If the time is used effectively, this can cause a new era of online shopping. Commuters can just simply take pictures of the bar codes or scan images and within the day, they can receive the items they want. It can go for anything materialistic! I believe this is a great idea.

  4. This looks like a good idea, the only issue that I see is the raise in smartphone theft on the subways. As I look around while riding the subway I notice how careless people seem to be while using smartphones. I would be hesitant to have something that would further distract commuters.

  5. This sounds like a great idea! We do spend a lot of time going shopping for grocery and also a lot of time is spent in the grocery store buying things which we did not need in the first place. That is the whole point of marketing of grocery stores. Why are all the product which we need located in the back? So we walk through a long aisle of candy and hopefully some people will stop by and buy a thing or two.

So I think this would hurt the grocery stores who implement this strategy to attract more sales. Another problem would be that MTA would have to spend the extra money to provide electronic advertisements in the subway cars. There are many problems which can come in the way of your new idea. I would personally enjoy this new shopping experience and it would also be more efficient for people with a busy schedule.

  6. That is such an cool idea! I take N train home to Astoria which is going outside of the tunnels and i have cell phone reception. That would be so awesome if on my way home i could do shopping and by the time i get there i would already expect the delivery! :)
